DAY 1: Welcome to Saratoga Springs
The Hilton Garden Inn is nestled at the edges of the Spa State Park and the National Museum of Dance.
Many of the photos displayed in the museum’s gallery were taken by Lawrence. Explore and begin to get a sense of how the light guides the creative vision.
Enjoy a welcome dinner and orientation meeting with the maestro who will bring insight to the art, and review the week’s program. Don’t forget your camera.
DAY 2: Saratoga Springs-The Basics of Photography-Food Experience
Saratoga Springs has a rich spa history based on its unique mineral water properties. Your choices range from mineral baths to full spa services.
This afternoon, meet with Lawrence for your on-location learning session. Today, basics such as exposure, focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO and more will be explored.
Class ends around 6 pm. After our session, we will embark on a Food Tasting Experience in downtown Saratoga. Interesting tip: Saratoga Springs has as many restaurants per capita as San Francisco. (B, Food Tasting)
DAY 3: Saratoga Springs-Independent Photography
The Saratoga Springs area has the only active spouting geysers east of the Mississippi River in the United States. The mineral springs for which the area is famous arise from fissures in the Saratoga Fault, which runs 65 miles (105 km) from Whitehall to Albany. The carbonated water that vents in springs and geysers is rich in minerals and salts.
Two of the most visited springs today are Geyser Island Spouter and Orenda Spring, along Geyser Creek. Geyser Island Spouter, which sends a narrow plume of water 10 to 15 feet (3 to 5 m) into the air, first emerged in the early 1900s. Since that time, it has deposited minerals that grow a tufa deposit at the rate of two inches (5 cm) per year. Orenda Spring has created a massive tufa dome, which continues to fossilize leaves and other debris as it grows.
We will provide insiders insight on the local scene. Lawrence will provide insight on where to capture the best images, which he will review with you during your post-program session. (B)
DAY 4: Saratoga Springs-Processing Light
You will spend the afternoon with Lawrence examining the use of light in photography. During outdoor sessions, you will have an opportunity to discuss the light as we capture it. The elements of seeing, capturing, and processing light will all come into focus during this time together .(B)
